The 20 photographs that comprise Niccolo Cosme's exhibit, on view at the Philippine Center in New York from August 28 to September 7, 2012, contain messages about HIV and AIDS. Yet in a sense they place a halo of aesthetics and sensuality at the center of Cosme's Christian-based iconography.

Rama Hari is considered a masterwork of choreographer and BP founder Alice Reyes, National Artist for Literature Bienvenido Lumbera (libretto), maestro Ryan Cayabyab (music) and National Artist for Theater Design Salvador Bernal (set and costume design). The show is a ballet-opera adaptation of the Indian epic, "The Ramayana."

Felipe de Leon's opera version of "Noli Me Tangere" is based on a historical novel by Jose Rizal which tracks the twilight of Spanish colonization in Philippines. A novel that rocked the Philippines to political consciousness in the late 19th century. A country whose classical opera tradition borrowed greatly from the introduction of European opera.

To diffuse the tensions with the rising China, PNoy Aquino III's administration's policy clearly aims to navigate those difficult negotiations deliberately through a multi-pronged diplomacy. In effect, the Philippines is engaging with China while tightening its alliances with Washington, D.C., Japan and other Southeast Asian countries. It is instructive that there will be no one-on-one or bilaterial meeting between Obama and Aquino III after the launching of the OGP in New York.

In thinking about the meaning and significance of winning a Chicago Filipino-American Hall of Fame Award, I must say that it is very flattering to be inducted into something called a "Hall of Fame." Ay naku! Masaya talaga! But if I pause for a moment to re-consider: Fame is not as important as the belief in and the firm commitment to something real and important that is outside of your self.
